Welcome to the self-proclaimed Rural Ottawa High-Speed Internet Blog. High-speed Internet access is virtually ubiquitous in the urban and suburban areas of Ottawa, but when I started this blog in 2005, only about 60% of the rural areas of Ottawa have coverage. However, even for rural citizens, high-speed Internet access is becoming as necessary as telephone service. Happily, high-speed coverage for rural Ottawa has increased significantly, and not only is coverage reportedly above 90%, many rural residents and businesses now have more than one choice of high-speed ISP.

This purpose of this weblog is to track news and events related to high-speed (broadband) Internet access in the rural areas of Ottawa and, to a lesser extent, in nearby townships.

I've opened up this blog to allow anyone to post to it. However, I continue to moderate and will remove any inappropriate content, e.g. anything not related to high-speed internet access in the rural Ottawa, the Ottawa Valley, Eastern Ontario, and the Outaouais.

Interest in Waterson Corners / Century Road East

Last night (Wednesday, June 8), I distributed 48 flyers to homes and businesses in Waterson Corners (Century Road East, between First Line Road and Second Line Road). This brings the total number of flyers that I've distributed to 154. I decided to canvas Waterson Corners after I received some indication that the area was a high-speed dead-zone and was contacted by at least one person in the area. Since Waterson Corners is on the northern edge of the First Line Road dead-zone (i.e. between Century Road East and Phelan Road), this seemed like a logical extension of my project/efforts.

I will post follow-ups to this topic in the comments section of this posting.

So far, I have received a number of responses from people on Century Road East who are interested in getting high-speed, but also a couple of people who already have high-speed, either via 2-way satellite or from RipNet.

Arryba Communications update

Arryba Communications is now operating in the Vernon area, and it is taking subscribers from that area. This fact doesn't have much direct impact on the First Line area, but it does indicate that Arryba is operating and moving ahead.

I've recently spoken with Arryba, and they are currently hoping to provide service in the First Line area in July. That would be excellent. They are currently investigating/negotiating a tower site.

Arryba has provided an update. They are actively persuing a tower location in the First Line area, and are still targetting service availability in early July. Actual availability will depend on whether or not Telecom Ottawa can install the fibre in time.

To date, Arryba has failed to secure a tower site in the First Line area. They had been hoping to lease space on some silos, from which to mount antennas.

They are still seaking locations, but at this point, IMHO, a July deployment is unlikely.
