Rural Ottawa High-Speed Internet Blog. High-speed Internet access is virtually
ubiquitous in the urban and suburban areas of Ottawa, but when I started this blog in 2005, only about 60% of the
rural areas of Ottawa have coverage.
However, even for rural citizens, high-speed Internet access is becoming as necessary as telephone service.
Happily, high-speed coverage for rural Ottawa has increased significantly, and not only is coverage
reportedly
above 90%, many rural residents and businesses now have more than one choice of high-speed ISP.
This purpose of this weblog is to track news and events related to high-speed (broadband) Internet access in the
rural areas of Ottawa and, to a lesser extent, in nearby townships.

I've opened up this blog to allow anyone to post to it. However, I continue to moderate and will remove any inappropriate content, e.g. anything not related to high-speed internet access in the rural Ottawa, the Ottawa Valley, Eastern Ontario, and the Outaouais.
We'll soon have to dial all ten digits even when making a local (i.e. non-long-distance) call within the 613 area code.
Starting June 17, 2006, you will hear a recorded message if you only dial 7-digits for a local call. Ten-digit dialing will be mandatory on October 21, 2006.
The significance of 10-digit dialing in rural Ottawa Internet access is that it will affect dial-up Internet users, who probably have 7-digit dial-up numbers programmed into their modem dialers. These dial-up access numbers will need to be updated on the users' PCs to include the 613 area code.

Netscape's Accelerated Dial-up Internet Service is now claiming speeds of up to
19x regular (unaccelerated) dial-up, for $18.95 CDN per month (same as before). I think that if you use certificate number
1797672 in the online form, you will get one month's service free.
The limitations of web acceleration remain unchanged (secure sites, streaming audio & video, and VPNs remain unaccelerated). So it remains a service for those not wishing to spend the extra cash to get true high-speed service or for those who do not yet live in an area where true high-speed Internet service is available.
